CBV Institute offers a comprehensive Program of Studies designed to assist professionals meet the challenging dynamics of business valuation, litigation support and corporate finance by providing a sound working knowledge of business valuation theory and practice.

To become a CBV, an individual must meet the following requirements:

1. Be of good character and reputation.

2. Have a degree from a post-secondary academic institution.

In order to be eligible to write the Membership Qualification Exam (MQE), an individual must have a degree from a post-secondary academic institution or university in Canada or other country which has the authority to grant degrees and is recognized by the Board of Directors. See Education Requirement policy.

3. Pass 4 mandatory and 2 elective courses in the Program of Studies.

The Program of Studies, consisting of four mandatory and three elective courses (two of which must be completed), is offered by distance education. Courses are offered in three terms per year, the Winter term (January – April), Summer term (May – August) and the Fall term (September – December). Each course has an examination at the end of the term. Completion of this program usually takes two to three years.

Level II – Intermediate Business Valuation

Level III – Advanced Business Valuation

Level IV – Special Topics in Business Valuation

Discontinued Courses

On 2013 the Program of Studies was revised. A completed elective course that has been discontinued will count towards meeting the elective course requirement.

Registered students who have passed the discontinued Law and Taxation in Business Valuation mandatory course will be exempt from the requirement to complete Level IV – Special Topics in Business Valuation.

4. Pass the Membership Qualification Examination.

Following completion of the courses in the Program of Studies there is the Membership Qualification Examination. This is a four-hour examination held once a year in September. Course examinations and the MQE cannot be written concurrently.

5. Have completed suitable business valuation experience.

To be eligible for admission as a member of CBV Institute an individual must have a minimum of 1,500 hours of suitable business valuation experience. See Experience Requirements Policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have passed the MQE, am I still a Registered Student?

A: Until admitted into Membership, Registered Student status will be retained if the student fee is paid.

Q: What if I don’t complete all the business valuation experience requirements within the five-year window? 

A: A Registered Student is expected to complete the experience requirement within five years and be admitted into membership within three years of passing the MQE.

Q: I have completed the work experience prior to writing the MQE, can I apply for membership? 

A: As long as the required 1,500 hours of suitable business valuation work experience has been obtained and the Registered Student has passed the MQE, they may apply for membership.
