This workshop will provide an introduction to the bioenergy sector and discuss historical as well as anticipated trends in renewable energy production.  Mr. Darren Frew, Director of Planning & Communication at B.C. Bioenergy Network will also include in his presentation a discussion pertaining to more recent trends towards local (“distributed”) energy generation, the link between renewable energy production and waste management, as well as the economic sustainability that is necessary for the viability of renewable energy systems (citing examples from projects that B.C. Bioenergy Network has supported). Mr. Frew will introduce two new, emerging technologies which B.C. Bioenergy Network is currently investigating which have the potential to add significant value to the forest sector by using wood that is traditionally left in the forest after harvesting.  Lastly, Mr. Frew will discuss near term prospects for renewable energy projects in light of the rapid decline in crude oil prices.
