Your Opportunity

As a member of the Valuation, Planning & Transaction Services team, the Financial Manager, Valuation is responsible for supporting Stantec’s valuation processes for acquisitions, strategic planning, financial reporting, and tax planning purposes as well as providing advice to senior executives on ad hoc valuation and financial analysis related to operations, restructuring, or other new initiatives, as required.

This position works closely with and reports to the Director, Valuations and Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and will also collaborate with Corporate Development, Operations, and the broader Financial Services teams to complete valuations and financial analysis for all Stantec business lines and regions.

Your Key Responsibilities

Supports Stantec’s valuation processes for acquisitions:

  • With Stantec’s Corporate Development group, analyze the strategic and financial fit of target engineering and design firms and provide recommendations.
  • Provide expert advice to the Director, Valuations and FP&A and the corporate development team on target pricing and letter of intent negotiations by completing financial analysis and valuation models from market data and preliminary information received from targets.
  • Collaborate with the acquisition team to identify, quantify, and track potential transaction costs and synergies on acquisition opportunities.
  • Determine expected acquisition returns to Stantec and assist Corporate Development in tracking post-close performance of acquisitions.
  • Prepare discussion documents and help present opportunities to senior executives.

Support Stantec’s valuation for financial reporting and tax planning purposes:

  • Perform valuation, related impairment indicator reviews, and testing as required for financial reporting including goodwill, intangible assets, and other long-term assets.
  • Prepare the quarterly fair market valuation of Stantec’s performance share units.
  • Perform valuation work for various Stantec’s legal entities and business centres, as well as valuations for tax and other statutory reporting purposes.
  • Research third-party market information to support Stantec market valuation processes.

Other responsibilities:

  • Manage the planning and execution of other ad hoc reporting and analysis to support business operations, restructuring activities, or new corporate initiatives for senior leadership, as required.
  • Consult on Stantec’s budgeting, forecasting, and strategic modelling processes by collaborating with the FP&A team.
  • Identify and drive process improvements including automation of processes where possible.
  • Ensure compliance with valuation principles, IFRS, Stantec Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) controls, and Stantec policies and procedures.
  • Protect the organization by keeping financial and acquisition target information confidential.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Fluency in valuation principles, IFRS, and SOX controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to construct various financial models including a solid understanding of Excel.
  • Client-focus in the delivery of services within a fast-paced, results-oriented environment. Demonstrated ability to persuade others.
  • Quick learner. Ability to think strategically and apply strong business acumen.
  • A strong work ethic with the ability to interact and work effectively independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to assess priorities, coordinate projects and meet deadlines.
  • A detail-orientation with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and process improvements.

Education and Experience

  • CPA designation and a second professional designation related to valuation and/or finance (CBV or CFA preferred).
  • A minimum of 10 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experiences in valuation or financial analysis.
  • Experience in the professional services industry and in using Bloomberg terminals and Planning Based Cloud Services (PBCS) is a plus.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Position will primarily work in an office setting. Activities are primarily performed in an environmentally controlled office setting or within a home office. Noise level varies but is generally at levels of conversation. Most of the time is spent using computer/laptop and related office equipment at a workstation. Subject to extended periods of sitting; may be required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk short to moderate distances to perform work. May require some field work.
