Sr. Business Development Analyst

SUMMARY

Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) Canada is a Canadian subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy. Focused on identifying and investing in business opportunities within all aspects of the energy infrastructure market across Canada, as well as electricity transmission internationally, BHE Canada has a focus on renewable energy such as wind and solar. BHE Canada is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.

BHE Canada is currently seeking a Sr. Business Development Analyst to be part of the BHE Canada team. Reporting to the Managing Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating business development opportunities for the company and supporting strategy development and competitor analysis efforts.

As a key player, the successful candidate will research competitors and targets, value competitors and targets, perform discounted cash flow analysis and determine financial measurements that are appropriate for investment decisions; document results in business case documents and effectively communicate results to BHE Canada team; and apply expertise in financial evaluation and risk analysis to co-develop optimal project investment decisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct financial economic evaluation activities essential to the proper assessment of investment and acquisition opportunities.
• Conduct energy, industry and electricity market and macroeconomic analysis and report findings on Canadian, U.S. and International markets.
• Develop and construct financial models for projects, acquisitions or other business development activities. Financial models include discounted cash flow levered and unlevered returns, income statements and balance sheets (three-statement models) and accretion / dilution analysis.
• Evaluate competitive environments and market participants, including preparation of detailed company profiles and competitor assessments.
• Perform due diligence activities for investment opportunities including financial analysis as well as coordinating team data review.
• Undertake a wide range of special projects and economic modeling activities related to the thorough evaluation of new business opportunities and acquisition opportunities.
• Assist in the development and communication of strategic initiatives and directions geared to supporting the growth of the company.
• Evaluate competitive environments and market participants, including preparation of detailed company profiles and competitor assessments.
• Support a US-based team evaluating transmission investments.

QUALIFICATIONS

• University degree (ideally a commerce, economic, engineering, or science discipline) or equivalent in experience.
• An MBA, CFA or professional accounting designation (or equivalent in experience).
• 5 – 10 years of experience as a financial and economic analyst.
• Electrical industry experience with a well-rounded knowledge of what drives the electric industry as well as the indicators of change within the industry would be an asset.
• Strong lateral thinker with highly developed conceptual and analytical skills.
• Excellent computer skills and a comfort level with most business and risk analysis-related software packages.
• Good business sense with a proven track record of participating in and bringing forward sound business decisions related to asset growth.
• Adaptable and flexible with the ability to work on more than one project at a time and with a variety of individuals and disciplines.
• A highly motivated team player with a positive attitude and the ability to function effectively as part of a team.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
