Director – Investment Accounting, Finance Division

One (1) Permanent vacancy, Corporate Controllership Branch

The WSIB’s Corporate Controllership Branch within the Finance Division is a key partner in the organization’s strategic transformation initiatives with a focus on meeting legislative requirements to be fully funded.

We are looking for a high performing leader with Private Investments and valuation expertise, reporting into the Corporate Controller/Executive Director that will be responsible for providing financial accounting and advisory support to the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Investment Officer on complex accounting issues related to interpreting accounting/regulatory policy for the WSIB Private Investments and Real Estate Portfolio.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Accountable for financial analysis guidance and counsel to management with respect to interpreting accounting/regulatory policy for the WSIB Private Investments and Real Estate portfolio.
  • Research and analyze new developments in accounting requirements, and assess and report impact on WSIB to the leadership team.
  • Revise accounting and investment policies to incorporate new regulatory and accounting requirements.
  • Identify, manage and mitigate investment risk.
  • Define and report on investment performance and express an opinion to the leadership team on of performance and valuations.
  • Responsible for the financial statement notes relating to the WSIB Investment and Real Estate portfolio
  • Provide and present comprehensive monthly and quarterly financial reports to senior management
  • Conducting comprehensive reviews of financial information as required
  • Leading and/or participation in finance related systems initiatives, implementations and upgrades with respect to the investment accounting systems
  • Liaise with external auditors and investment managers
  • Assist in year-end reporting

Professional Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Financial Management coupled with CA, CFA, CBV or ACCI designation (or relevant public company reporting expertise)
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant business experience (preferably gained within a large accounting firm and/or another large financial services company) with significant exposure and understanding to large and complex investment portfolio.  Insurance and/or Pension fund  industry knowledge an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to achieve high performance, consistent and integrated services and successful deliverables
  • Awareness of external economic conditions and industry trends to identify potential impact on the organization
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to present complex facts, information and explanations to internal and external audiences. Ability to build constructive and effective relationships, work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders, influence decisions and acceptance for recommended initiatives, strategies and solutions
  • Influential skills to provide expert advice and direction on all WSIB investment related regulatory matters including cost-benefit evaluations and financial projections, where questions from a varied audience with financial and nonfinancial backgrounds must be addressed
  • Superior writing skils to prepare/edit comprehensive reports and other documents dealing with financial matters
