2018 MQE Top 3 Marks

1st Place (Winner of the 2018 George Ovens Award sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP)

Katie Socka, CPA, CA, CBV

My interest in the CBV designation started in 2014 through a valuations course at university. Although I took two years after graduating before signing up for the next course, I’m extremely happy I continued to pursue this designation and I’m honoured to join CBV Isntitute. Looking back, I’ve learned an incredible amount over the past two years thanks to both the CBV courses and the constant opportunities I’ve had to put the technical skills learned through these courses into practice. I want to thank everyone at EY for their support and guidance throughout this process, my family and friends, and my study partner Kieran for going through the program of studies with me for the past two years.

2nd Place

Balpreet Singh, CPA, CA, CBV, CFA

It is an honour to have finished my CBV designation as one of the top three MQE writers. Although the path to completing the CBV Insitute’s Program of Studies and passing the MQE involved many evenings and weekends, the skills, competencies, and technical knowledge I have gained have proven to be well worth the time investment. The Program of Studies has made me a more well-rounded professional, and this profession has exposed me to a variety of industries and companies to learn about. I look forward to continuing to learn and use the skills and knowledge I have gained to better serve my clients.

This achievement is the result of the cumulative effort of others. First and foremost, thank you to all of my colleagues at KPMG for providing support and guidance over the course of my studies, and the opportunities presented to me to learn and develop. I would also like to thank my family and friends, including my dog, Junior, for continuing to provide an invaluable amount of support in every way possible.

3rd Place

Alex Wong, CPA, CA, CBV

My initial exposure to Business Valuations was from training and competing in case competitions with some of my closest friends during university.  However, it wasn’t until I met Ron Patrickson, a Partner in Valuations at EY, that I began to appreciate the breadth of work a Valuator is able to do, which cemented my interest in the field.  The CBV program is wonderful as it establishes a strong technical foundation for students, while they gain practical experience through work.

I am honoured to have placed in the top 3 amongst my talented fellow valuators this year.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank my wife Jolie, family, and close friends for their support throughout this entire process.  I would also like to thank Ron Patrickson, Frances Potgieter, and the entire team at EY, as I most definitely would not have achieved such a great result without their mentorship and the diverse opportunities they’ve provided.
